Mr Velota Sung is a vastly experienced and highly regarded consultant ophthalmologist based in Birmingham. He is a glaucoma and cataract expert who specialises in cataract surgery, glaucoma management, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, small incision cataract surgery, combined cataract and glaucoma surgeries, glaucoma tube-shunt surgery and angle-closure glaucoma.

Mr Sung has been working as a consultant eye surgeon at the regional Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre for over 17 years. He is a pioneer in the field of complex glaucoma surgeries, he developed a safe surgery system for tube-shunt implant surgery and was the first ophthalmologist in the UK to use goniosynechialysis for angle-closure glaucoma surgery. He is also an expert in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and complex cataract surgery in glaucoma patients.

Mr Sung graduated from the University of Wales, He undertook a comprehensive eye specialist training programme at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and then a glaucoma fellowship at the world-renowned Moorfield Eye Hospital. While working in his current consultant role he continued his studies, achieving an MSc in medical leadership from the University of Warwick in 2013.

He is extremely passionate about education and research, as well as contributing to countless peer-reviewed medical publications. He has trained over 20 glaucoma specialists working in UK and overseas. He also runs a research programme through which he supervises PhD and MD research projects. Additionally, Mr Sung is a clinical trial scholar at the Birmingham Clinical Trial Unit and an examiner for the Royal College of ophthalmologists.

Mr Sung was awarded with an NHS Bronze National Clinical Excellence award, in recognition of his outstanding care.
